When I started the hobby rankings I had a primary goal, finding undervalued hitting prospects to buy cards of. After a week or so I got a few, “will you dive into pitchers at all?” questions. Something I hadn’t considered, but soon realized I probably should. While I don’t personally collect pitchers, many people who buy and sell prospects prefer pitchers. I’ve had conversations with a handful of people before who have told me that the margins and opportunities to make money are even better for pitchers than hitters if you know what you’re doing. This led me down the same path I went down with hitters. What makes a pitcher’s card sell for more money? Is it age? Is it organization? Is it having a low ERA? Is it their ability to rack up strikeouts? Through some trial and error I looked at the most expensive pitchers, found traits they had in common, and worked down from the top, creating a weighted formula that I thought would accurately predict how well a pitcher’s cards should sell. Here it is.
